    Default Giving a Wedding Speech

I was just asked to be a Maid of Honor for my friend and I will have to give a speech. Not only is this causing me anxiety for the obvious reasons, but I loathe getting emotional in front of people, and every time I think about what I'm going to say, I get choked up. This is actually causing me even more anxiety than usual.

Don't make an impromptu speech when you are at the wedding. Write the things that you wanted the bride and groom to hear and try to forget about the people in the wedding. After writing your speech then practice in front of the mirror. Hope this helps.

It's good advice to write what you want to say and, in this way, you don't even have to look at the people when you're speaking, just concentrate on the text. If it's making you ill, however, you need to tell your friend that you cannot do it. If she knows you well, she will understand.

I think if it were me I would tell her that I can't give a speech. Or I would offer to give a speech at a different event. I have not been to many weddings where the maid of honor gave a speech so I don't think it would ruin it or anything.

If you really need to give a speech, better write a short but precise message to the couple. Look at the bride and groom when you are already saying your speech and don't look at other people so you won't get embarrassed.

Thank you for all the responses! I explained to the Best Man about my social anxiety and he agreed to do most of the talking. All I had to do was raise my champagne glass and say "Congratulations! We love you!" I was OK and it worked out just perfect. Nobody knew how much I wanted to crawl under the table!

If it is a problem and she understands I would say that you are not comfortable doing it. If she insists, practice practice and practice. have notecards, and remember it is only a couple minutes (if that) of your life =) good luck!
