I have heard that the only sure way to ensure your documents are safely shredded, is to use a criss cross shredder. Until now I have been using a normal one thinking I was perfectly safe. Do I need one or am I been paranoid?

If you want to be totally sure that nobody reassembles your shredded documents, I know it may seem unlikely but it can happen, use a cross cut shredder. When it comes to identity theft prevention there’s no such thing as paranoia.
If someone is reassembling your shredded documents, they are likely not identity thieves. You can also dispose of the shredded documents at different intervals and in different containers, thereby separating the shredded components. This introduces another step into the document reassembly process.
